Why potatoes?

Because it is a more responsible option

When professional kitchens ask themselves how to update their menus to be more sustainable without compromising on taste or quality, the answer lies close to home in a Finnish field. Potatoes are not only a familiar and safe raw material, but a surprisingly responsible choice for today’s kitchen.

Naturally responsible home-grown potato

Potatoes are a familiar raw material for us Finns, and for good reason. It thrives in Finnish conditions and grows efficiently: quickly, on a small area and with little need for fertilisers or pesticides.

In Finland, potatoes often do not need to be artificially irrigated, which saves water and energy. It also travels a short distance from field to table and has a long shelf life.

Domestic potatoes are also responsible in a social sense. When you choose Finnish potatoes, you are supporting domestic farmers and the livelihoods of hundreds of families across the country.

Nutrient kit

Responsibility can also be measured in terms of nutritional values. Potatoes are full of nutrients that are good for you. It’s rich in fibre and vitamin C, as well as B vitamins, potassium, iron and antioxidants.

Potatoes should be eaten with the skin on, as most of their vitamins, minerals and fibre are right under the skin. Eating the skin is not only healthy but also a waste-reducing act.

Versatile raw material

Potatoes are one of our most versatile ingredients, suitable for a wide range of food trends, from vegetarian to fine dining. Naturally gluten-free, it is suitable for a wide range of diners. For the professional chef, potatoes are also a practical choice, easily adding texture, flavour and richness to dishes. And most importantly, potatoes keep you hungry, which makes them more satisfying to eat.

Processing matters

How the raw material is processed also matters. When you choose JEPO’s cooked potato products, the potatoes are, as the name implies, cooked and ready to use. Our potatoes are grown in Ostrobothnia, right next to our potato factory. The journey from field to processing is therefore short and traceable. We cook the potatoes using biogas and pellets.

Waste management

When it comes to our products, we also often talk about food waste management. JEPO potato products are packed in GN-sized containers, making it easy to portion potatoes as they go. This reduces food waste and makes kitchen work more efficient.
